In my capacity as a reviser at the UN IRMCT, I have worked with Francine for five years.
During this time, I have had numerous occasions to benefit first-hand from her professionalism, experience and insight. Not only have her explanations as a native-speaker of French proven invaluable in deciphering and understanding complex legal and medical texts, she has also demonstrated an exceptional gift for detecting and unwrapping the subtlest of nuances and being able to present these in the clearest of terms.
Perhaps most remarkable is her exceptional knowledge and understanding of all levels and registers of English, gained not solely through academic education but also through years of direct lived experience in Anglophone countries.
I recall one assignment in particular that dealt with highly specific industrial and trade descriptions. The English was of such complexity that I found myself baffled. Not only had Francine's innate talent and experience given her the skills to explain some of the most difficult concepts to me, she had also succeeded in producing a translation in French that was the twin of the original English. The terminology, register and tone of her translation was breathtaking. And when, somewhat chastened by just how good her work was, I asked to see her referencing and research, she was able to produce this immediately. And in so doing, I was, once again, utterly impressed.
